Is this Government in any way Conservative? This "Conservative" Government never uses the tax system to incentivise - only to punish, and all we seem to hear from it are endless nanny state rules and regulations. The latest one last week was on the calorie count of pizzas - at least that's how it was headlined in the media. In reality it is about the calorie count in all sorts of food we eat, including at restaurants.
I don't know about you, but I don't go into a restaurant wanting to know how many calories I am about to eat. I'm not interested. I want good quality food at a reasonable price. It really has nothing to do with the Government what I eat and how many calories are in my food. But this is about to change.Read more
The following is an adapted version of my 'Brexit at Noon' bulletin sent to Freedom Association members today. These bulletins are sent out to members every day apart from Sundays. One of many benefits of being a member of The Freedom Association. Click here to find out more.
Anyone who has been following Brexit closely will not have been surprised that the EU rejected Theresa May's Chequers plan. The EU had already told her it was unacceptable. But perhaps what was surprising was the brutality of it all, with Pres. Macron sticking the boot in at the end.
Theresa May is a stubborn woman who refuses to admit defeat. Cabinet ministers have taken to the airwaves saying that Chequers is not dead. This is the EU playing hardball. We are coming to the end of negotiations - this is to be expected. The anger Theresa May showed during her press conference in Salzburg yesterday (she was visibly shaking) highlights that the Government was not expecting the EU's reaction. It couldn't have gone any worse.Read more
We have just taken delivery today of some new flyers. They are available to purchase from our shop in quantities of 150 and 350 at the heavily subsidised price of £3 and £5 respectively. We are able to send them to you for these discounted prices thanks to the generosity of those members who have kindly donated to the Better Off Out campaign.
Conservative Party members received a letter from the Prime Minister today. She is trying to sell her Chequers plan, and on the reverse of the second A4 page are quotes from senior Conservatives under the title of "The right deal for Britain".
Liam Fox commented that "this deal will give the UK the freedom to sign our own, independent trade deals". We know that under this plan we are not going to be able to to sign independent comprehensive trade deals. He must be hoping that members are going to fall for it. I have a message for him: they're not stupid.Read more
Responding to the proposals agreed by the cabinet at Chequers yesterday, Andrew Allison Head of Campaigns at The Freedom Association, said:
"What Theresa May and her fellow Remainers railroaded through cabinet yesterday - her so-called third way - could very easily be a third rail for the Conservative Party. The common rulebook for goods means that we will effectively remain in the single market for goods. It means that some 90 per cent of British businesses who do not export will have to stick to EU rules.Read more

In the red corner we have full blooded Marxist policies advanced by Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbott, et al. In the blue corner... Well, it isn't really a blue corner, more a light red - maybe even pink. As Allister Heath said in an excellent article in today's Telegraph, Remainers and lefty Conservatives may feel that they no longer have a home, but neither do those of us who are Thatcherites - those of us of a more libertarian/classically liberal persuasion and prefer free markets and oppose big government. We are politically homeless, too.
Here's part of Allister's article:Read more
I have just read an article by the Prime Minister in the Telegraph. In it she talks passionately about the gender pay gap. She even ends her article by saying:
"It seems extraordinary to us that women 100 years ago were not only denied the right to vote but had to fight so hard for it. It is our job to make sure that it doesn’t take another 100 years for the gender pay gap to become a thing of the past."Read more
After the Prime Minister's statement to the House of Commons regarding Russia, Dr Julian Lewis MP, chair of the Defence Committee and a member of The Freedom Association, asked the following question:
"No reasonable person can possibly doubt that the Russian Government have behaved with arrogance, inhumanity and contempt, not least in failing to respond to the Prime Minister’s deadline, which they surely would have done if they had known that they were innocent of this charge. In welcoming the Prime Minister’s expulsion of 23 diplomats who are really intelligence agents, may I ask her to make it clear that any retaliation in kind by the Russian Government will be met by further expulsions, perhaps including even of the ambassador, who spends so much time coming to talk to us in this place, bemoaning the poor state of Anglo-Russian relations? Does she accept that Russia traditionally respects strength and despises weakness, and that the time has come to recognise that 2% of GDP is not enough to spend on defence when we are reverting to the sort of adversarial relationship that we had when we spent a much higher proportion of GDP on ensuring that this country was well defended?"Read more
